A Young Professional Reconnects with Her Jacksonville Roots While Growing Her Career
Monday, June 18, 2018
Erin Kleinlein is a Project Manager at Turner Painting & Construction in Jacksonville. When she relocated from South Carolina, Erin was looking forward to reconnecting with her roots but was unsure of what life would be like in small-town Illinois. What she found, surprised her. In Jacksonville, she has had significant opportunities to get involved in the community and to grow personally, as well as professionally. Life in the I-72 Opportunity Corridor can be quite exciting. The difference between here and a larger city is that when opportunities for involvement present themselves, it’s highly likely that you’ll know the people you are serving with, instead of being in a room full of strangers.
Erin is a Project Manager and Heavily Involved in Business Operations
Turner Painting & Construction specializes in commercial painting and construction as well as residential painting, remodeling and new construction. Along with project management, Erin also oversees human resources, public relations, material management, and various accounting aspects for the company. We wanted to learn more about her career and why she chose to grow it in Jacksonville, Illinois.
What inspired you to start on your career path?
I was previously working in South Carolina with non-profit and government sectors as a project manager when my family requested that I help with their growing business. I was honored by their request and saw it as an opportunity to become immersed in a small business where I could put my past experience to use while learning more about business dynamics as a whole.
Why did you choose to do so in this community?
I was born in Jacksonville, IL and my family relocated to South Carolina when I was very young. I have always felt that Jacksonville was a second home and I have quite a few family members that reside in the Jacksonville area. The small-town feel of Jacksonville was also an important factor in my decision to relocate. When a family member reached out and asked if I would be interested in helping manage their business, I was grateful for the new professional opportunity as well as a chance to reconnect with my home-town.
How has being located here benefited your career?
Contrary to my initial belief, since I moved to a smaller community, I have had many more opportunities to become involved in community organizations such as the local Chamber of Commerce, the Young Professionals Network, and other organizational boards. This has not only provided experience for my career, but has also contributed greatly to growing my network for future opportunities.
Have you received any unique support or opportunities by working in Jacksonville?
Turner Painting & Construction has constantly been a proponent of working in and with the Jacksonville area community. Not only does the company give to many causes in the area, they allow me have a flexible schedule to work on my passion projects within the community.
What do you like about the Jacksonville Young Professionals group?
I joined the Jacksonville Young Professionals Network shortly after relocating to Jacksonville to meet others in the community that were like-minded. I became the community involvement coordinator and I now serve as the president of the organization. It has proven to be a wonderful resource for professional development as well as friendship.
What are your future goals?
I hope to become more involved in the economic planning and development of Jacksonville and the surrounding areas. I have seen the potential growth during my first three years living in the area and have been amazed by the community support. I plan to continue working with non-profit groups and government agencies to continue to improve the lives of those that live in the area.
Is there anything the community can do to support you and to help you achieve them?
The community and local governments do an outstanding job of working together to achieve greater goals. Continuing to make local agencies and organizations transparent and welcoming will further my future goals as well as those of the community.
